Hmm, but I prefer to use this term "LIKE WHAT YOU DO instead of DO WHAT YOU LIKE" ;~)

July 29, 2009 at 3:11 PM

You can't choose what/ whom to Like. Its a natural feeling beyond control. Likewise with careers its not genuine if we choose what to enjoy. Follow your passion, that's what will undoubtedly emanate true peace and serenity inside out.

Dina, I completely agree with you...but what I've seen in practical life, most people do their job now because they need money for living instead of following their passion. And we can't blame them because in human need hierarchy, a human MUST fulfill 3 (three) basic needs at first : proper clothes, enough meals and proper place to live. Meanwhile ... Read Moreto follow the passion in doing job, only can be applied when a person has achieved the highest level of need : Self Actualization. As I learned, to jump from 3 basic needs to Self Actualization level, a person still have to pass through other 3 levels : safety need, social need and appreciation need. So it will be not realistic for most of people.
Hope you don't mind with my opinion ;~)

Aprin- Thank You for your genuine opinion. I really appreciate it. Yes, coming from a war- torn third world country I can definitely relate to your side of this story.

However, smiling in a friendly manner I partially disagree with -
"to follow the passion in doing job, only can be applied when a person has achieved the highest level of need."

What is the definition of HIGHEST level? Doesn't relativity play an interfering role on this one? I was born in a country who's war began before my heartbeat existed. Things have been unbelievably devastating at times. When Life turns into a matter of bread and shelter now I exactly know what you mean. However, I ALSO know of a few people who made it right to the zenith of success more than any other person in the vicinity born with a silver spoon. Everyone born physiologically normal DO have the potential to reach peaks BEYOND their fondest imagination. Its a matter of how FAR we are exposed to begin to see Life to the fullest.

As much as I agree survival comes before living life to the fullest, there is also those who don't see survival as the highest point. Rather they imagine AND believe Life beyond survival. Life worth Living! Life not less than suicide. When I say I do KNOW I EXACTLY mean that. Very often its the reigns traditions that hold back our youth from... Read More grabbing their passions via blocking the exploration of their potentials. Believe me, I HAVE BEEN THERE MYSELF. There comes a point when all you hear is negativity and discouragement, but to overcome all that viscosity and resistance is the true challenge and victory in the end. Its tragic to be born and raised under un-supportive circumstances, however, the BEST news is We have ALL the tools we need to make those passions a reality. I strongly believe God wouldn't let us explore those things in our MINDS that which we can't achieve via dedication and perseverance

From what I know, within each job (that may just be to provide basic human needs -BHN- for the time being) one can find a way to express one's creativity - starting a support group with co-workers for kids, the elderly etc etc, some creativity is always required in work processes, too. What this does, is allow you to see the other dimensions of possibilities even within the current space. Continuing that may well facilitate growth in other areas. I do believe unless there is passion attached to the 'job' one is never truly happy. If one can craft one's passion into an activity that provides BHN ...that's the best. It may well be that those needs will become more simple as one will discover that an abundance of the material does not necessarily lead to happiness. The fulfillment of a passion overrides everything else

Jamela- Thank You Dear. Very insightful Indeed. Agreed with everything you said. In fact, sometimes we don't see the better sides of that which surrounds us unless we got the right attitude. The grass is always greener on the other side for amateurs :)

On a personal level, I also feel that, being young, I have to first like what I can do NOW to be able to earn money, etc. (Of course it still requires my talents.) So firstly "I have to love what I do", then later "I will do what I love" indeed.

July 29, 2009 at 3:14 PM

Noemi- Thank You for your opinion. Well, How hard can You push yourself to love something you don't like?

Eg- You need to buy a new dress. You go shopping and didn't find that Love-at-first-sight dress. You are running out of time so might have to settle for a dress that's simply OK. Not too excited as you should have been, You think "Ok let me buy this one, perhaps, I'd like it eventually". There is a >50% chance you may not really like it as you didn't WANT it in the first place.

Likewise, one can like something they don't Love, but its not very practical to someday Love a career that didn't appeal to you, unless you didn't recognize its soul in the first place ;)

Dína, I perfectly agree, but as it was mentioned above, you can also apply your talents in a job that's not yet your dream job, and it might bring you such opportunities that one day you will live your dreams.
I wanted to have all this too early until I realised that I don't have enough experience or knowledge to do that. And if I don't accept the job that I can do with my talents NOW, then I will be jobless, moneyless and can't start building up my life. I have followed my interests and passions so far, so I believe the pieces will all fit together in the end.

July 29, 2009 at 3:16 PM

Noemi- Dearest, I'm not saying its a wise decision to quite your job now. What I meant is that despite the current circumstances, we can begin to MENTALITY get in motion with our passions. Whichever point of Life you may be right now you can CHOOSE to move in alignment with that which pleases you. That which makes you smile simply with the thought of it. There have been MANY MANY individuals who divert their careers, from Business tycoons to chefs, From Doctors to tourist guides- AND FELT CONTENT, Only and Only cos they didn't settle for what was at hand which WAS bringing their bread home. At that very moment their passions were only in their hearts and imaginations. I agree money is undoubtedly essential for basic needs. Yes, no doubts about it. But there is also the priority of YOUR passion swimming in your mind, which ONLY "YOU" can make a reality with ALL the TOOLS that lie WITHIN YOU.

Dear Dína, thanks for the reply. Of course, I don't want to settle down for the same job all my life. I've got many dreams and visions in my mind and will do my best to go with the flow. :)

"And I'll bless the works of your hands". Works of your hands: something that you are good at such that it becomes a skill and to some extent a talent you'll always be satisfied spiritually, physically or even financially:-)

Aprin, it's hard to like wat you do but more fullfilling to like wat you do. Some pple are into jobs that they do not like doing and working to them becomes torture. I take an occupation by default and not by design. Doing what you like add to the sum total of mans' happiness. Instead of saying like what you do I'd like to take an approach of saying ... appreciate what you do coz even if u are happy with the job u do sometimes u just need to appreciate and b thankful because it brings food on your table and a roof over your head!

Joshua- Thank You for your opinion. Much appreciated.

"Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get."~ Dale Carnegie.

Joshua, I STRONGLY believe EVERY single one of us are born with at least ONE Talent. Yes, I have no doubts about this! Some find it early, while others discover it late. Then there are those sad people who simply don't care to figure out what God gifted them. What I say is, no matter how awesome an excuse maybe, there is SOMETHING Out there YOU are GREAT at. Yes, that's right, that ONE task you would enjoy doing as much as you're GOOD at it. What exactly is passion? Isn't it a combination of self-confidence and skill fused at various degrees at an individual level? ... Read More

As for appreciation, from my mind, body and Soul, its something we should genuinely do to God. At the end of the day, regardless, how and when we feed, clothe and shelter ourselves, sustenance is showered to Us via God's mercy and Blessings. That's what I believe.

Hence, I wouldn't confuse our talents, capabilities and passions with susceptibilities AS much as I do realize how inter-dependent these can get when one needs to find their bread and roof. I suggest you watch the Movie "Pursuit of Happiness" starring Will Smith. Its PERFECTLY worthy movie giving your time. So now GO GET THAT PASSION! :)

Hey, I've watched the movie! Really good isn't it! Did u know that the movie is based on a guy who appears at the very end, the guy who crosses the road behind will and his son. INTERESTING, guys u gotta pardon my typo errors coz I'm at work and using my 4ne to "tap into" the discussion! It's true that all my thanks goes to God for me appreciation is like something I do subconsciously, when I am thankful for my position in life I gotta b thankful to some one or a superior power and in this case it is GOD the most high. He makes everything into being!

When I read your words, "A job that won't require your talent can't pay your Heart..." - to me that means it would be wonderful to have a job that pays your heart - but if current circumstances do not offer that type of job, you can still pay your heart by using your talent.

One doesn't have to wait until they have that special "job" in order to use ones talents. :-)

Dora- Thank You for your input. Yes, I agree talents can be revealed via various forms... To start with we can be appreciated for our loyalty and dedication with your current and it would pay off someday. Lovely quote :)

Longing and rapture in reverie

Rueful reflection sounds its cry

Sculpture set by the artist to cast
Carving of stone with the hand divine
Drawing holding grace in shadow and line
